Problem:

The owner of the dike shown here is wondering whether the flow induced in its foundation by the upstream reservoir is likely to initiate contact erosion at the interface between the base of the structure, built of clayey silt, and its alluvial foundation.

Ordered test:

To answer this question, the owner is taking soil samples from the two horizons likely to be affected by contact erosion and orders a CET test to be carried out on these samples.

Test results:

The CET test established that the measured critical erosion velocity is between 6 and 9 cm/s.

Interpretation:

A quick calculation shows that the expected flow velocity in the foundation is approximately 0.02 cm/s (KxΔH/L).

This is therefore lower than the erosion initiation velocity.

The expected flows are not likely to cause erosion.
